Microbiology Student
Xamantha Descallar is a college student currently pursuing a degree in Microbiology at Texas A&M University and Lone Star College. She speaks English fluently, understands Cebuano, and has studied Japanese. She spends time volunteering at medical facilities such as Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center and Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital. Her academic interests include nursing, pathology, and forensic science, all of which are supported by consistent academic achievement. Outside her studies, she enjoys digital art, photography, cooking, playing musical instruments, dancing, singing, and learning several languages.
Early Life and Cultural Background
Xamantha Pearl Gales Descallar was born in Cebu, Philippines. When she was one year old, her family moved to the United States, where she grew up surrounded by various languages and cultures. In her household, Cebuano was primarily spoken, along with English, which is commonly used throughout the Philippines.
Education and Academic Excellence
Her education began in Lehighton, located in Carbon County, Pennsylvania. She performed well throughout primary and secondary school. Later, she moved to Spring, Texas, in search of more advanced learning opportunities. She attended Irons Junior High School and Oak Ridge High School, where she participated in numerous clubs and organizations that reflected her diverse range of interests. She became involved in Robotics Club, Science Bowl—where she served as team captain and led the group to a third-place finish—Art Club, Yearbook Club, Drone Club, and Biotechnology Club. She was also accepted into the National Art Honor Society and the National Honor Society.
During her time in school, she earned several awards that recognized her academic success. She won first place in the District 5 CYO Spelling Bee for three consecutive years, from 2013 to 2015. She received Student Achieving Excellence awards, an Academic Excellence award in 2019, and was recognized for her skills in geometry and other areas of mathematics. In 2020, she earned second place in the SCI: TECH Biotechnology Competition, noted for her strong data analysis abilities.
In 2023, she graduated from Oak Ridge High School, ranking among the top 10% of her class and earning the Magna Cum Laude distinction. She now studies at Texas A&M University and Lone Star College, aiming to complete her Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology early. Her plans include pursuing licensure in Microbiology and enrolling in an accelerated nursing program as part of her graduate studies. Her educational focus continues to center on microbiology, nursing, pathology, and possibly forensic science.
Volunteerism and Community Engagement
She has taken part in a variety of volunteer activities. In April 2019, she began volunteering at IRONMAN Texas in The Woodlands, where she assisted with setting up and maintaining aid stations for marathon runners.
In November 2019, she helped with the 24th Annual Children’s Festival at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, organizing minigames and activities for children. She returned to volunteer again at the same festival in 2022, demonstrating her lasting interest in supporting youth events.
From December 2021 through 2023, she gave her time to the Montgomery Food Bank in Conroe, where she sorted non-food items, organized meat products by safety and quality, and prepared produce for distribution.
In summer 2022, she participated in the Houston Methodist Caring Teen Summer Internship Program. In the Nursing Department, she helped maintain clean patient areas, recorded patient needs, and assisted nurses in providing care. In the Food and Nutrition Department, she supported meal planning, provided information on dietary options, and assisted in preparing and distributing food.
She also contributed to the Fall Festival in Conroe by making promotional materials and supplying pumpkins and candy. At the Family Gift Market Parent Shopping Event in Spring, she assisted parents with gift selection and helped with setup and cleanup.
In December 2022, she participated in the Houser Elementary Breakfast with Santa event, where she prepared activities and games for children and organized the event spaces.
In September 2024, she participated in a Service Learning Workday at The Gardens at Texas A&M University, where she assisted with terrain restoration. She also assisted in April 2025 at the Science Olympiad in College Station, supporting scoring and general operations. As of June 2025, she volunteers at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center, where her duties include helping with discharges, delivering specimens and flowers, assembling patient kits, cleaning rooms, managing inventory, and providing support to staff.
Language Proficiency and Cultural Interests
Xamantha Pearl Gales Descallar is primarily fluent in English and can hold conversations in Cebuano. She has intermediate skills in Japanese, at about the N5-N4 level. Earlier, she also explored learning Norwegian, Russian, and German. Most of her language learning has been self-directed, though she took Japanese courses during high school and college.
She continues to practice Cebuano and Japanese and has recently started learning Spanish. Her goal is to achieve conversational or near-native fluency in Cebuano, Japanese, Spanish, and possibly German, so she can effectively communicate with people from diverse backgrounds and serve patients with varied needs.
Personal Interests and Hobbies
Alongside her studies and volunteering, she enjoys activities that showcase her creativity. She likes playing online computer games, using them as a way to stay connected to friends who live far away.
Digital art is a meaningful hobby for her. She creates artwork based on personal experiences, media she enjoys, and time spent with friends. Photography has been a growing interest over the last six years. She began by taking pictures during visits to the Philippines and has continued photographing nature and daily life around her campus. She also likes cooking and often photographs dishes she makes or meals shared by others from different cultural backgrounds.
Since childhood, she has been passionate about music. She first learned to play the recorder and piano, and later started playing the acoustic guitar and ocarina. While living in Pennsylvania, she and her mother performed in dance recitals for the Kenlin Dance Academy. She still likes dancing and is interested in trying Hip-Hop Dance classes in the future.
In addition to her other hobbies, she enjoys singing karaoke by herself or with her family and friends. Karaoke is a way she bonds with her loved ones, either at home or when traveling together. It has become a special tradition rooted in her Filipino heritage and a favorite activity during family gatherings.
